Cape Derby| Cape Town Spurs vs Cape Town City
On a Sunday afternoon at DHL Stadium, Cape Town City emerged victorious over Cape Town Spurs, winning with a score of 2-0 in a DSTV Premiership match. The match marked the final fixture for both teams for the year, with each side keen on ending the year with a victory in the widely anticipated Cape Derby.
At the 10-minute mark, City’s first scoring opportunity fell to Paciencia, whose shot was blocked repeatedly by the host team.
Six minutes later, Darwin Gonzalez attempted a shot from outside the box, but it sailed over the bar. In the 25th minute, Darwin surpassed himself, putting in a threatening cross for Paciencia and securing City another corner.
Thabo Nodada made a grand sacrifice at the 28-minute mark, putting his body on the line to block the host’s shot. After an obvious handball by Dortley 32 minutes into the play, the referee allowed the game to continue.
At the 35-minute mark, Katlego Mokhuoane made a spectacular entrance, scoring his first goal for City with an impressive free kick.
As the second half of the game began, Jaedin Rhodes nearly doubled City’s lead with a shot targeted directly at the goalie.
With just half an hour left in this action-packed derby, tensions were rising and City held the lead. At the 66-minute mark, Mokhuoane and Slatsha replaced Ambina and Kutumela, after a commendable performance by the pair.
Kutumela, 74 minutes into the game, made an impressive pass to Gonzalez, but the shot bounced off the goal bar. Only six minutes later, an exceptional save from Keet almost equaled the score. Buchanan’s free kick was excruciatingly close to being a game-changer.
Rhodes, creating the landmark moment of the match, doubled the lead in the final minutes, scoring his fourth goal of the season. With a deciding lead of 2-0, Cape Town City claimed the match, finishing off the year on a high note.
