Confederation of African Football (CAF)
By Sello Masilo
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revised its player registration regulations for the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. Announced on 30 January 2025, these changes now permit players to represent different clubs within the same season in these continental competitions, aligning CAF’s rules with those of UEFA.
Key Changes in Player Registration
Previously, CAF’s regulations prohibited players from participating in the CAF Champions League or CAF Confederation Cup for more than one club during a single season. This restriction often limited player movement between clubs competing in these tournaments. The updated rules now allow football clubs to register a player for the CAF Champions League or the CAF Confederation Cup, even if that player has already participated in either competition for another club within the same season.
This change is expected to facilitate increased player transfers between clubs, as players can now move freely between CAF teams without the previous restriction of representing multiple clubs in the same season.
Extension of Player Registration Deadline
In addition to the regulatory changes, the CAF Executive Committee has extended the player registration deadline for both competitions to 28 February 2025. This extension provides clubs with additional time to strengthen their squads ahead of the knockout stages.
Alignment with UEFA Standards
By adopting these changes, CAF’s regulations now mirror those of UEFA’s Champions League and Europa League, where players are permitted to represent different clubs in the same season. This alignment is anticipated to enhance the appeal of CAF’s competitions to fans, broadcasters, sponsors, and partners both within Africa and globally.
Implications for African Football
The revised regulations are expected to have several positive impacts on African club football:
• Increased Competitiveness: Clubs can now bolster their squads during the season, leading to more competitive matches.
• Enhanced Player Mobility: Players have greater freedom to transfer between clubs participating in CAF competitions within the same season.
• Attraction of Talent: The flexibility may attract higher-quality players to African clubs, knowing they have the opportunity to compete in continental tournaments even after mid-season transfers.
• Improved Performance on Global Stage: With strengthened squads, African clubs may perform better in international tournaments, such as the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States.
