Johannesburg, 10 April 2025 – South African football is on the cusp of a historic achievement as Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have both secured spots in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League, while Stellenbosch FC has made a remarkable run to the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup. This marks a significant moment for South African football, highlighting the nation’s growing prominence on the continental stage.

Mamelodi Sundowns vs. Al Ahly

Mamelodi Sundowns, affectionately known as “The Brazilians,” have once again demonstrated their dominance by advancing to the semi-finals. They are set to face Egyptian giants Al Ahly, a team with a storied history in African football. The first leg is scheduled for Friday, 18 April 2025, with the return leg on Friday, 25 April 2025. 

Al Ahly secured their semi-final berth with a 2-0 aggregate victory over Sudan’s Al Hilal, thanks to pivotal goals from Imam Ashour in both legs. Sundowns, on the other hand, edged out Tunisia’s Esperance de Tunis with a narrow 1-0 aggregate win, showcasing their defensive resilience and tactical discipline.  

Orlando Pirates vs. Pyramids FC

Orlando Pirates have continued their impressive run under the guidance of Spanish coach José Riveiro. The Buccaneers will clash with Egypt’s Pyramids FC in the semi-finals, with the first leg set for Friday, 18 April 2025, and the second leg on Friday, 25 April 2025. 

Pirates advanced by defeating Algeria’s MC Alger 1-0 on aggregate, with a crucial goal from Mohau Nkota in the first leg. Pyramids FC reached this stage after a thrilling 4-3 aggregate victory over Morocco’s AS FAR.  

CAF Confederation Cup Semi-Finals

In the CAF Confederation Cup, Stellenbosch FC has emerged as a surprise package, making their way to the semi-finals in their debut continental campaign. They are set to face Tanzania’s Simba SC, with the first leg on Sunday, 20 April 2025, and the return leg on Sunday, 27 April 2025. 

Stellenbosch’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable, eliminating seasoned opponents and showcasing a brand of football that has won them admirers across the continent. Simba SC, known for their passionate fanbase and attacking prowess, will provide a stern test for the South African newcomers.

The other semi-final features Morocco’s RS Berkane against Algeria’s CS Constantine, promising a North African derby filled with intrigue and tactical battles.
