Motorsport’s governing body
By Sello Masilo
Paris – Motorsport’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), and Formula 1 (F1) have officially approved Cadillac’s entry as the 11th team on the F1 grid from the 2026 season. The American automaker, backed by General Motors (GM) and TWG Motorsports, successfully secured the green light following a thorough review of its capabilities and commitment to the sport.
This landmark decision represents a major expansion for F1, which has seen a surge in popularity in the United States in recent years. Cadillac’s arrival also signals the growing involvement of major American automotive manufacturers in the sport.

Cadillac’s Journey to the Formula 1 Grid
Cadillac’s bid to join Formula 1 was initially linked to Andretti Global, which had partnered with the automaker to secure an entry. However, after F1 rejected Andretti’s proposal earlier this year, General Motors (GM) strengthened its commitment to the project, which ultimately convinced both the FIA and F1 to approve the team.
The FIA’s selection process for new teams has been rigorous, ensuring that any new entrant meets sporting, technical, and financial requirements. Cadillac’s successful bid means it will join an elite roster of teams, becoming the first new constructor in F1 since Haas entered in 2016.
“As we said in November, the commitment by General Motors to bring a Cadillac team to Formula 1 was an important and positive demonstration of the evolution of our sport,” said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1.
“I want to thank GM and TWG Motorsports for their constructive engagement over many months and look forward to welcoming the team on the grid from 2026 for what will be another exciting year for Formula 1.”
