Former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane
Former Public Protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, has been sworn in as a Member of Parliament representing the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
This comes just a month after her removal from office, indicating that her entry into the political arena was warmly welcomed by the party.
Mkhwebane announced her membership of the EFF on Monday and was sworn in alongside former Deputy Mayor of Knysna Municipality, Virgil Gericke. The ceremony took place in Parliament on Friday and was facilitated by the National Assembly Deputy Speaker, Lechesa Tsenoli.
Advocate Mkhwebane has a remarkable history in civil service, having held key roles such as a Senior Researcher for the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Senior Investigator in the Office of the Public Protector, and Director in the Department of Home Affairs.
Notably, she dedicated herself to the nation as the Public Protector from 2016 to 2023, during which she received three consecutive clean audits and issued 412 investigation reports, with only 17 of them being reviewed by the courts.
EFF Spokesperson, Sinawo Thambo, highlighted the extensive qualifications and experience of Advocate Mkhwebane. She holds a B. Proc and LLB degrees from the University of Limpopo (1989-1992), as well as a Diploma in Corporate Law and a Higher Diploma in Tax Law from the University of Johannesburg.
Thambo also mentioned that Mkhwebane’s contributions extend beyond South Africa, such as her involvement in international forums and her participation in meetings held by the UN High Commission for Refugees and the African Union.
The EFF views the swearing-in of Advocate Mkhwebane and Gericke as a historic occasion, signifying growth in South Africa’s democratic project. The party is confident that both MPs will bring quality to its organizational and parliamentary work, ensuring that the government is held accountable for any corrupt and incompetent actions. The EFF’s principles and policies align with Mkhwebane’s values, making the party an attractive choice for her.
