Businessman Arrested in Odendaalsrus for Possession of Suspected Illicit Cigarettes and Bribery

Odendaalsrus Businessman Arrested

Odendaalsrus, Free State – A 33-year-old businessman was arrested by the Welkom Public Order Policing (POP) for alleged possession of illicit cigarettes and attempting to bribe a police officer. The arrest took place following a tip-off about a consignment of illicit cigarettes that had just arrived at a supermarket in the Odendaalsrus Central Business District (CBD).

The Bust

Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng provided details on the incident. “On 24 May 2024 at about 13:30, the information was operationalised, and the business was approached and searched,” said Captain Thakeng. Upon conducting the search, officers discovered seven boxes containing suspected illicit cigarettes. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) was promptly summoned to the scene to assess the situation.

Attempted Bribery

While officers were busy counting the substantial quantity of cigarettes, an unexpected twist unfolded. “The owner allegedly put a black plastic bag inside the pocket of one of the SAPS members. Then, when he asked what it was, the business owner explained that it was cash amounting to R5,000 and that he was going to lose business when the police seize the cigarettes,” added Captain Thakeng.

This bribery attempt was immediately flagged, and the businessman was arrested on the spot for trying to influence police officials.

Continued Investigation

The suspected illicit cigarettes were seized as evidence, and the businessman is set to appear in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate Court on 27 May 2024. The case underscores ongoing issues with illegal trade and corruption, which authorities in the region are striving to combat.
