Burkina Faso Military Leader

In a significant political development, Burkina Faso’s ruling military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has dismissed Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambèla and dissolved the government. This decision, announced through a presidential decree on Friday, did not specify the reasons behind the dismissal.

Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambèla was appointed as interim prime minister in October 2022, following the coup that brought Captain Traoré to power. The decree stated that members of the dissolved government would “carry out ongoing business until the formation of a new government.”

Burkina Faso has experienced a series of political upheavals in recent years. In January 2022, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba led a coup that ousted the democratically elected President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré. However, by September 2022, Damiba himself was overthrown by Captain Traoré, marking the country’s second coup within a year.

The nation continues to grapple with a persistent Islamist insurgency, with groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State intensifying attacks. This ongoing conflict has resulted in the displacement of over two million people and the loss of more than 26,000 lives since 2015, encompassing both military personnel and civilians.

Under Captain Traoré’s leadership, Burkina Faso has realigned its international partnerships, notably strengthening ties with Russia. In December 2023, Russia reopened its embassy in Ouagadougou after a 31-year closure, signaling a deepening relationship between the two nations. Additionally, in October 2024, Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov and Prime Minister Kyelem de Tambèla discussed enhancing military cooperation, reflecting Burkina Faso’s shift towards Russian support in its fight against terrorism.

This political shift has coincided with a distancing from Western allies, particularly France. Burkina Faso, along with neighboring Mali and Niger, has severed ties with France, the former colonial power, and has embraced Russian assistance. Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré stated that cooperation with Russia “better suited” the country’s needs compared to its historical ties with France.
