Bafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos
By Nkosana Khumalo
In a thrilling 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, Bafana Bafana edged South Sudan 3-2 with a last-gasp goal from Thalente Mbatha at the Juba National Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The victory, while significant for securing three crucial points, left South African head coach Hugo Broos both relieved and critical of his team’s performance.
Mbatha’s Magic Strikes Again
Thalente Mbatha has become a crucial figure for Bafana Bafana in recent matches. In this game, he replicated his heroics from the prior week, where he netted a last-minute goal against Uganda. In the 93rd minute, with the score locked at 2-2, Mbatha scored from outside the box to snatch victory for South Africa. His ability to deliver under pressure has been a significant asset, contributing to two consecutive match-saving goals in the AFCON qualifiers.
The game began with South Sudan taking an early lead after Tito Odong Okello converted a penalty in the 15th minute. Bafana Bafana responded swiftly, with Oswin Appollis equalising just two minutes later. Appollis then doubled his tally just before halftime, giving South Africa a 2-1 lead. However, South Sudan equalised through Yuel Kuach in the 58th minute, making it anyone’s game until Mbatha’s dramatic intervention in added time.
Broos Expresses Mixed Feelings
Despite securing three points, Hugo Broos was far from satisfied with his team’s overall performance. Speaking after the match, Broos acknowledged that the dramatic victory masked an underwhelming display. “I thank the good Lord upstairs; He was with us in this game,” said Broos, referencing the late goals that helped Bafana secure points in their last two games. However, he was quick to point out that his side should have put the game to bed earlier: “We should have done better. If we had done better, I think the score should not be 3-2 but maybe 5-2 or something for South Africa.” Broos felt that his team’s inability to dominate the game after taking the lead showed there was much work to be done.
Broos’s comments came after a somewhat laboured performance by his side, contrasting with their display against Uganda, where they managed a 2-2 draw after a spirited fightback. Broos hinted at possible changes in future line-ups, especially with Orlando Pirates players like Mbatha and Relebohile Mofokeng showing strong form .
South Sudan’s Strong Showing
South Sudan’s coach, Nicolas Dupuis, took pride in his team’s performance despite the loss. He praised his players’ effort against one of Africa’s stronger teams, calling South Africa “one of the best in Africa.” Dupuis highlighted the resilience of his squad, which managed to claw their way back into the game twice before Mbatha’s late heroics .
The Road Ahead for Bafana Bafana
With this victory, Bafana Bafana continue their strong start in the AFCON qualifiers, although the team’s performances have been inconsistent. Broos will now turn his attention to addressing the issues raised in this match. One major concern is the team’s tendency to let opponents back into the game after taking the lead. Additionally, questions have been raised about certain selections, particularly Veli Mothwa’s role in goal. Mothwa’s error in the previous match against Uganda nearly cost South Africa the game, leading to speculation that Broos might opt for a different goalkeeper in the next fixture .
Bafana Bafana are set to return home on Wednesday, 11 September 2025, where Broos will have time to reflect and prepare for their upcoming matches. The AFCON qualifiers remain a top priority for South Africa, and Broos will be keen to ensure that his team delivers more consistent performances as the competition progresses.
Tactical Concerns and Future Adjustments
Broos hinted that Bafana Bafana’s lack of sharpness and consistency could force him to reconsider his squad choices going forward. Several players have not had much game time leading into the AFCON qualifiers due to delays in the South African Premier Soccer League season. Broos had expressed concerns before the Uganda match, but those issues seem to have resurfaced in the South Sudan game.
Players like Mbatha, who have been featuring in the CAF Champions League with Orlando Pirates, could see more starting time as Broos looks to field sharper, match-fit players. The coach has acknowledged that adjustments will be necessary as the team moves into the more competitive stages of qualification .
