In a significant move to bolster the fight against financial crime and corruption, the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC). This partnership is set to enhance the skills and capabilities of legal professionals in addressing the growing threats posed by cybercrime and financial misconduct in South Africa.
The MoU, signed by Advocate Doc Mashabane, Director General of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD), and Nischal Mewalall, CEO of SABRIC, outlines several key areas of collaboration. These include mitigating financial and cybercrime risks, developing and implementing digital capabilities, and enhancing capacity-building and skills development within the sector. This partnership signifies a robust response to the increasing complexity of financial crimes, particularly those perpetrated in the digital space.
Advocate Mashabane emphasized the critical need for legal professionals, including magistrates, judges, and law enforcement officials, to acquire specialized skills in prosecuting cybercrimes. He noted that the rapid rise of cybercrime necessitates a bold and ambitious approach to capacity building across the entire legal profession. “We need to retrain officials to appreciate what is needed to successfully prosecute cybercrime,” Mashabane stated, highlighting the role of the Criminal Assets Recovery Account (CARA) fund in supporting digital forensic investigation training.
The partnership also aims to raise public awareness about the risks associated with technological advancements, particularly the vulnerability of individuals to cybercrime. The Justice College will play a crucial role in educating both legal professionals and the public on these risks, ensuring that everyone is better equipped to navigate the digital landscape.
Mashabane assured that the MoU would not be a mere formality but would lead to concrete actions. He committed to implementing the partnership’s objectives by the time new students are admitted in February, ensuring that the training programmes are in place to begin addressing the challenges posed by cybercrime immediately.
This collaboration between the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College and SABRIC is a pivotal step in fortifying South Africa’s legal and financial systems against the pervasive threats of financial crime and cybercrime. It reflects a broader commitment by the Department of Justice to work closely with key stakeholders in the financial sector to enhance the security and integrity of the country’s financial system.
The MoU represents not only a strategic alliance but also a proactive approach to ensuring that South Africa’s legal professionals are well-prepared to tackle the sophisticated and evolving nature of financial crimes in the digital age
