ATM Bomber
By Lerato Mpembe
In the early hours of Thursday, a group of ten suspects attempted to bomb an ATM in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg. The South African Police Service (SAPS), acting on intelligence, intercepted the suspects, leading to a shootout. One suspect was killed, two were injured, and two others were arrested. Five suspects managed to escape and are currently at large.
The suspects are believed to be linked to multiple ATM bombings and other serious crimes in Gauteng and surrounding provinces. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat such criminal activities.
SAPS Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Shadrack Sibiya, emphasized the collaborative efforts between police, private security, and businesses to dismantle syndicates involved in ATM bombings. He noted that intelligence and organized crime units are working together to address this issue.
Between January and March 2025, South Africa recorded 41 ATM bombings, underscoring the urgency of addressing this crime trend. The SAPS has intensified efforts, collaborating with private security and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), to clamp down on such incidents.
At the scene, one firearm was recovered. However, a rifle is still missing, as five suspects managed to escape. The SAPS is actively pursuing these individuals and urges anyone with information to come forward.
