Kgangetsile Motsumi, a security officer at the Klerksdorp Court Building, has been arrested by the Hawks on Thursday, 17 August 2023, after he broke into the office of a senior prosecutor.

His arrest has been welcomed by the Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari.

Dr Makhari raised concerns over the security bridges, as the said prosecutor deals with high-profile cases.

The 50-year-old is facing charges of housebreaking and theft.

The Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court postponed the case against Motsumi, to 12 September 2023, for further investigations.

This comes after Motsumi appeared in court in relation to an incident that occurred on Sunday, 23 July 2023, wherein he entered the office of a senior prosecutor using a key.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has indicated that Motsumi is out on a warning.

Before this break-in, the prosecutor had suspicions of unregulated entries in her office, when she was not around. She then installed a camera and linked it to her phone for security purposes.

On the day of the incident, she went to her office to collect her gown, and when she entered her office she realised that the camera was unplugged,” said NPA spokesperson Henry Mamothame.

Motsumi was seen on a recorded footage going through drawers and documents belong to a senior prosecutor.

When she got to where she was travelling to on the same day, she checked the recorded footage on the camera and saw  Motsumi going through her drawers and documents.

He proceeded to take coffee and sugar and later realised that the camera was recording him. He quickly turned it off and left the office,” Mamothame said.

Meanwhile, court officials have complained about their items going missing in their office but these incidents are not yet linked to Motsumi.
