Brazilian President Lula da Silva

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 79, underwent successful brain surgery on Monday night to address a subdural haematoma resulting from a fall in October. The procedure, performed at the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in São Paulo, was completed without complications, and President Lula is currently in stable condition under intensive care monitoring.
The incident traces back to 19 October 2024, when President Lula suffered a fall at his official residence in Brasília, leading to head trauma and a minor brain haemorrhage. Following the accident, he received several stitches and, on medical advice, cancelled a planned trip to Russia for the BRICS summit.
On Monday, President Lula was admitted to the Brasília branch of the Sírio-Libanês Hospital after experiencing persistent headaches. An imaging exam revealed an intracranial haemorrhage, prompting his transfer to the São Paulo unit for a craniotomy to drain the haematoma. The hospital confirmed that the operation proceeded without complications, and the President is recovering well under intensive care.
This health episode comes at a challenging time for President Lula’s administration, which has been navigating complex political and economic landscapes since his return to power for a third term. His government has pledged to eliminate Brazil’s primary budget deficit and has been working to reassure investors about the country’s fiscal health. The Brazilian real recently experienced volatility, hitting an all-time low last month amid concerns over public finances.
President Lula’s recent health challenges include a hip replacement surgery in September 2023, after which he was discharged and continued his duties from the Alvorada presidential residence.
The medical team at Sírio-Libanês Hospital is scheduled to provide further updates on President Lula’s condition in a press conference later today. The nation remains hopeful for his swift recovery and return to leadership.
