Brazilian national Risclif Tadue Ramos, 36, was presented before the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Monday, 22 July 2024. Ramos was caught attempting to smuggle a consignment of 4kg of cocaine, ingeniously concealed within a body wrap, into South Africa via the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA).
The operation was spearheaded by the Hawks’ Organised Crime Investigation unit based in East Rand, following actionable intelligence about a drug mule arriving from Brazil. “A multidisciplinary team approached the identified flight at the landing bay. The suspect was located,” detailed Captain Lloyd Ramovha, Hawks spokesperson. Remarkably, Ramos had no checked-in luggage, only the narcotics he was personally carrying.
Upon his detention, it became evident that Ramos was not proficient in English, leading to the sourcing of an interpreter at the ORTIA police station. “He admitted to the officers through the interpreter that he was in possession of drugs,” Captain Ramovha explained. A subsequent body search uncovered the cocaine, wrapped around Ramos’s body, resulting in his immediate arrest and charges under the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act.
The court case has been momentarily postponed to Tuesday, 30 July 2024, when Ramos will face a bail application hearing. Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, the Gauteng Provincial Head of the Hawks, praised the alertness and effective action of the law enforcement agencies involved. “We have acted to ensure that many methods that organised criminal groups employ to illegally import harmful illicit substances into the country are thwarted,” he asserted.
