Botswana’s newly elected President, Duma Boko, has introduced his new Cabinet, with key appointments that signal a commitment to addressing national priorities and ensuring diverse representation. Among the notable appointments is reigning Miss Africa, Ms Lesego Chombo, who has been named the Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs. The announcement comes as President Boko embarks on his tenure, following his recent inauguration after the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) triumphed over the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in the October 30 elections.

In a statement, President Boko emphasised the importance of youth engagement, declaring, “We are saying to young people, make yourself visible.” His administration’s decision to appoint Chombo highlights a commitment to empowering young people and promoting gender equality in the national agenda.

Key Cabinet Appointments to Drive National Goals

President Boko’s Cabinet selections reflect his focus on economic revitalisation, healthcare reform, and fostering Botswana’s role on the global stage. Dr. Stephen Modise has been appointed as the Minister of Health, supported by Deputy Minister Mr. Lawrence Ookeditse from the Botswana Patriotic Front. Together, they are expected to lead efforts towards establishing a National Health Insurance (NHI) system, aligning with Boko’s pledge to strengthen healthcare access across the country.

Dr. Micus Chimbombi has been named the Minister of Lands and Agriculture, with Dr. Edwin Dikoloti, an independent candidate, serving as his deputy. This appointment underscores the administration’s dedication to advancing Botswana’s agricultural sector and addressing land reform in a sustainable and inclusive manner.

In international relations, Dr. Phenyo Butale has been chosen as the Minister of International Relations, reinforcing Botswana’s commitment to maintaining beneficial trade and diplomatic ties. President Boko reiterated his administration’s focus on “anchoring foreign policy in the interest of citizens,” noting that relations with neighbouring countries and addressing regional migration challenges will be priority areas.

New Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education

One of the administration’s innovative steps is the creation of a new Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, led by Minister Dr. Nono Kgafela-Mokoka. This new ministry aims to prioritise children’s rights, ensuring schools are environments where children feel valued and supported. UNICEF Botswana has applauded the establishment of this ministry, stating that it “will go a long way in ensuring that children’s rights remain at the heart of the national agenda.”

Economic Policy and the Diamond Sector

As part of his economic strategy, President Boko has promised to address challenges within Botswana’s economy and bolster local industry. Speaking to SABC News in Gaborone, Boko highlighted the importance of strengthening the country’s skills development in the diamond sector and finalising discussions regarding the sale of a stake in De Beers, the diamond mining company. “We must ensure that we are not only exporting resources but also building the skills and capabilities of Batswana to benefit from our natural wealth,” he stated.

A Focus on Innovation Over Ideology

In a social media update, President Boko stated, “We will not be confined by labels like socialism, capitalism or communism. We will design solutions unique to our country.” His administration’s approach marks a shift towards pragmatic governance, focusing on tailored solutions to Botswana’s specific challenges rather than adhering strictly to any ideological framework.
