Free State MEC for Community Safety
By Thabo Mosia
The Free State MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, Jabu Mbalula, has commended the South African Police Services (SAPS), the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), and the judiciary for their exceptional collaboration that led to the successful conviction and sentencing of 12 members of the notorious Born to Kill (BTK) gang. The convictions have been hailed as a significant victory in the fight against organised crime in the province.
The BTK gang, infamous for spreading terror in Botshabelo and surrounding areas, was convicted of a range of violent crimes, including armed robberies, assaults, housebreaking, and rape. The sentencing, which includes multiple life terms for several members, marks a turning point in restoring safety and security in the affected communities.
MEC Mbalula: “A Victory for Justice and Safety”
MEC Jabu Mbalula issued a statement following the sentencing, praising the SAPS and NPA for their meticulous investigations and prosecution.
“We have noted and welcome the sentencing. For police to secure harsh convictions, they need to conduct thorough investigations and synergise their efforts with the NPA. This collaboration was evident in this case, and it is what we have consistently called for,” said Mbalula.
He further lauded the judiciary for acting swiftly and decisively in handing down life sentences to the key members of the gang.
“The court’s uncompromising action in sentencing these criminals sends a clear message that crime does not pay,” he added.
The Crimes of the BTK Gang
The BTK gang had earned a reputation as one of the most feared criminal groups in the Free State. Their reign of terror included a wide range of violent crimes that left residents of Botshabelo and surrounding areas living in fear. He further emphasised that the sentences handed down to the BTK gang members should serve as a warning to others.
Community Reactions
The residents of Botshabelo have welcomed the sentencing, expressing relief that the BTK gang has been brought to justice. Community leader Thabo Moloi said,
“For years, we lived in fear of these criminals. Today, we feel a sense of justice. We are grateful to the police and the courts for restoring our safety.”
However, some residents called for continued vigilance to ensure that similar criminal elements do not resurface.
The Role of Community in Fighting Crime
Mbalula highlighted the critical role communities play in supporting law enforcement efforts. He urged residents to maintain strong ties with local police by providing information and cooperating in crime prevention initiatives.
A Step Towards Safer Communities
The sentencing of the BTK gang members marks a significant milestone in combating organised crime in the Free State. It reflects the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and the community.
The Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents and urged continued cooperation between stakeholders.
Moving Forward
