The Acting Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Jane Thupana, recently received a situational update regarding operations at the Lebombo Port of Entry, a vital transit point between South Africa and Mozambique.

This report follows interactions with officials at the Ressano Garcia Port in Mozambique, as tensions emerged after Mozambique’s recent presidential elections. Sporadic protests and rising frustrations over alleged electoral irregularities in Mozambique have led to a cautious approach at the border, where BMA officials are prepared to manage any disruptions affecting both people and goods crossing the Lebombo Port.

The Mozambican elections, held on October 9, saw the ruling FRELIMO party, which has governed Mozambique since independence, secure a decisive lead. However, opposition groups, including the RENAMO party, have raised concerns about voting irregularities, citing issues such as missing names from voter rolls, limited oversight in counting processes, and reports of foreign nationals voting illegally. Observers, including those from the European Union, noted several procedural issues, such as inconsistent voter registration records and challenges faced by election monitors. This controversy has led to calls for peaceful resolutions and reassurances from political leaders that citizens’ rights will be respected .

While the Lebombo border has remained open and operational, the BMA has issued warnings to travellers to avoid crossing at night, should the situation escalate. According to Thupana, the priority remains to ensure that border operations continue smoothly, with extra support from law enforcement on standby to prevent disruptions. The BMA is committed to closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary to ensure safety and efficient transit across the border .
