Former MK Party Youth League leader Bonginkosi Khanyile is scheduled to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 13 June 2025 at 9:00 AM in connection with the July 2021 unrest that shook South Africa to its core. Khanyile, a polarizing figure known for his fiery activism, faces serious charges tied to the violent riots that claimed over 300 lives and crippled the economy. Adding fuel to the unfolding drama, former President Jacob Zuma has called on MK Party members to flood the courtroom in a show of solidarity, raising the stakes in what promises to be a high-stakes legal battle.

The July 2021 Unrest: A Nation in Chaos

The July 2021 unrest remains a painful scar in South Africa’s recent history. It began when former President Jacob Zuma was jailed for contempt of court after refusing to testify at the State Capture Inquiry. What started as protests in KwaZulu-Natal quickly spiralled into chaos, spreading to Gauteng. Shops were looted, businesses torched, and roads blocked as anger boiled over. By the time the dust settled, more than 300 people had lost their lives, and the damage to infrastructure and the economy was pegged at a staggering R50 billion.
Khanyile, then a vocal supporter of Zuma, found himself in the spotlight. Authorities claim he played a key role in fanning the flames, accusing him of using speeches and social media to push people to riot. One piece of evidence that has grabbed headlines is a video where Khanyile allegedly tells a crowd to “continue burning the country” until Zuma is released. That clip, prosecutors say, is proof of his intent to incite violence – a charge that could land him in serious trouble if proven.

Khanyile’s Day in Court: What to Expect

When Khanyile steps into the Durban Magistrate’s Court on 13 June 2025, it won’t be his first brush with the law. After his arrest in 2021, he was released on R5,000 bail, but the road since then has been bumpy. Earlier this year, in March 2025, he was briefly detained again after missing a court date. He blamed illness and bad weather, and after handing over a medical certificate, his bail was reinstated. Still, the slip-up sparked debate about whether he’s taking the case seriously.

This time, the 13 June appearance is a pre-trial hearing. Khanyile faces charges of inciting public violence and breaking the Disaster Management Act, which was in place during the unrest to curb gatherings. His legal team, led by advocate Scelo Cele, plans to fight hard. They’re expected to argue that the video evidence isn’t clear-cut and that Khanyile was exercising his right to protest, not calling for violence. The prosecution, meanwhile, will lean on witness statements and digital records to build their case. With tensions high, the courtroom could become a battleground of its own.

Zuma’s Call to Arms and Political Heat

The case isn’t just about law – it’s drenched in politics. Former President Jacob Zuma, now head of the MK Party, has thrown his weight behind Khanyile. In a video shared widely online, Zuma told party members, “It is absolutely important that we go to court and give him the support he needs.” His words have stirred the pot, with many expecting a large turnout of MK supporters outside the court on 13 June. Some see this as a chance for Zuma to flex his influence, turning a legal matter into a political rally.
Khanyile’s ties to Zuma go back years. Once a rising star in the Fees Must Fall movement, he shifted gears to align with Zuma’s camp, eventually joining the MK Party. But his time there wasn’t smooth. In April 2024, he was ousted from the youth league after clashing with party leaders over his outspoken attacks on the ANC’s coalition with the DA, which he called a “white” party. That fallout didn’t dim his loyalty to Zuma, though, and now the former president’s backing could make this trial a lightning rod for bigger issues like race, power, and justice in South Africa.
