Bongile Ntombela
By Lerato Mpembe
In a compelling story of resilience and community solidarity, Durban-born South African Bongile Ntombela is set to return home after overcoming significant financial and legal hurdles in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Her predicament, marked by an unpaid loan and subsequent travel ban, garnered widespread attention and support, culminating in her imminent reunion with her family.
The Financial Quagmire
Having resided and worked in the UAE for six years, Ntombela’s life took a challenging turn earlier this year when she lost her job. Faced with the ultimatum to resign or face termination, she chose the former, a decision that led to the cancellation of her residence visa. This development had severe implications, particularly concerning a bank loan she had been servicing.
In the UAE, debt is treated as a criminal matter, and failure to meet financial obligations can result in stringent legal actions, including travel bans and imprisonment. Ntombela’s inability to continue loan repayments due to unemployment resulted in the bank imposing a travel ban, effectively preventing her from leaving the country. She owed approximately 25,000 dirhams, equivalent to about R124,600. Despite securing a job offer in South Africa, the bank remained steadfast, insisting she settle the debt before any travel restrictions could be lifted.
A Plea for Assistance
In a bid to resolve her dire situation, Ntombela turned to social media, posting a heartfelt video on TikTok detailing her struggles and appealing for help. She expressed her frustration, stating, “I’m sitting here without proper housing. I’ve been to immigration, I’ve been to the court, and I’ve spoken to our consulate, but nobody has tried to help me.”
Her candid appeal resonated with many, leading to an outpouring of support. Within days, a crowdfunding campaign was established, amassing over R144,000, surpassing her initial target. Ntombela expressed profound gratitude, saying, “Thank you to everyone who has given me a contribution, who has given me a call, who has sent words of encouragement. Ngiyabonga kakhulu (Thank you very much).”
Community and Government Support
The overwhelming response from fellow South Africans highlighted a collective spirit of ubuntu, demonstrating compassion and solidarity. Ntombela remarked, “I never thought… it’s almost like just being reminded how kind people can be and how compassionate people have been.”
Additionally, Clayson Monyela from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) played a pivotal role in providing guidance and support during her ordeal. Ntombela acknowledged his assistance, stating, “Thank you so much to Clayson who has come through in so many ways. He has sent people through to help.”
Reflections and Lessons Learned
Ntombela’s experience underscores the complexities expatriates can face when dealing with financial obligations abroad, particularly in regions with stringent debt enforcement laws. Her story serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of understanding local legal frameworks and the potential consequences of financial decisions.
She reflected on her journey, noting, “We all make decisions thinking it’s the right decision at the time… I take full accountability that I couldn’t make better decisions this year.”
A Triumphant Return
With her debt now settled, Ntombela is preparing to return to South Africa, where a new employment opportunity awaits her. She looks forward to reuniting with her children and rebuilding her life, buoyed by the support and kindness of her compatriots. Her story is a testament to the power of community and the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity.
As she prepares for her journey home, Ntombela remains committed to giving back, acknowledging the support she received and expressing a desire to assist others facing similar challenges. Her experience highlights the importance of empathy, community support, and the resilience required to overcome personal and financial crises.
