Border Management Authority (BMA)
By Lerato Mpembe
The Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner, Dr. Michael Masiapato, has lauded the recent apprehension of two immigration specialists at the Beitbridge Port of Entry by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks. These arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into corruption and fraud within South Africa’s border management systems.
Details of the Arrests
The two officials were detained on Monday evening following a probe linked to the case of Dorah Ncube, an immigration specialist arrested last year for allegedly facilitating the illegal entry of six Malawian nationals through Beitbridge. Ncube remains in police custody. The recently arrested officials appeared before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to face charges related to their involvement in the illicit processing of undocumented individuals.
BMA’s Stance on Corruption
Dr. Masiapato reiterated the BMA’s unwavering commitment to eradicating corruption within its ranks, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards any misconduct that compromises the country’s security and the integrity of its border management systems. He stated, “We continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement agencies in their investigations to ensure that those involved in corrupt activities are held accountable.”
Ongoing Anti-Corruption Efforts
Since its establishment on 1 April 2023, the BMA has been proactive in identifying and addressing corrupt practices. To date, 27 officials have been dismissed for various transgressions, including aiding and abetting illegal activities and the unauthorized processing of travelers and goods. Currently, the authority is handling 45 ongoing cases related to such misconduct. Dr. Masiapato assured the public that decisive action will be taken against any official found to be involved in unethical practices.
