A recent case of corruption in Bloemfontein, has resulted in a man being fined R20,000. The accused, Christopher Abraham, appeared before the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 03 October 2023, where he received his sentence.

According to Captain Christopher Singo Edward, the Free State Police Spokesperson, Abraham’s conviction stems from an incident that occurred in June 2021. Once the matter was reported, the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation team, based in Bloemfontein, launched an investigation into the case. On 18 August 2021, a sting operation was conducted at the Bloemfontein High Court. Abraham was apprehended after paying the gratification of R200 to the complainant.

The sentence handed down to Abraham was seen as a positive step in the fight against corruption. Major General Mokgadi Bokaba, the Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Free State, praised the sanction and urged the public to refrain from offering bribes to officials. Instead, she emphasized the importance of allowing officials to perform their duties without any form of corruption.
