Bloemfontein Flying Squad
Bloemfontein –The Bloemfontein Flying Squad arrested three individuals after uncovering drugs valued at around R2.4 million. The interception took place on the evening of Friday, 8 March 2024, and has struck a chord in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the Free State.
At approximately 20:45, following intelligence-led information, the Flying Squad zeroed in on a truck en route from Gauteng, moving along the N1 towards Bloemfontein. The truck, believed to be ferrying a clandestine cargo, was intercepted and searched at the Verkeerdevlei Toll Plaza.
“The truck was intercepted at Verkeerdevlei Toll Plaza by the Flying Squad members and pulled over,” reported Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, Police Spokesperson for the Free State. He detailed the operation’s success: “The 59-year-old driver and two other passengers were arrested after 14 boxes containing the Khat plant, worth an estimated value of R2.4 million, was discovered in the cabin.”
The driver and his accomplices, aged 38, now face serious criminal charges. Adding a sobering facet to the ordeal, a young child was caught up in the incident. “A 4-year-old that was travelling with them was taken to a place of safety,” added Kareli, hinting at the often unseen human impact of such crimes.
The three suspects are set to have their day in court, where they will be charged with offenses associated with dealing and possession of narcotics. This operation underscores the relentless commitment of the Free State police to uproot the pervasive drug network within the province.
