Mtubatuba High Court Delivers Justice: Nxumalo’s 10-Year Reign of Terror Comes to an End

10 June 2024 marked the end of a horrifying chapter for many families in KwaZulu-Natal as Bhekithemba Fanozi Nxumalo was sentenced to 12 life terms and an additional 75 years in prison for a series of rape incidents. The verdict was delivered by the Mtubatuba High Court, bringing some closure to the victims and their families.

Start of a Nightmare

Nxumalo’s “reign of terror” began in July 2012, when he broke into a house in Mdungandlovu Reserve. Armed with a knife, he woke an elderly woman and her two granddaughters, demanding money. When his search proved futile, he turned his violence towards the 24-year-old granddaughter, raping her.

A statement from the police explained, “The granny and the younger granddaughter were saved by the 24-year-old granddaughter, who managed to send a call back to her brother, who came to their rescue. Nxumalo managed to escape into darkness.”

A Decade of Horror

Following this initial attack, Nxumalo continued his horrific spree. His method was consistent: he targeted young women walking alone, dragging them into bushes or sugarcane fields and threatening them with a knife. He often raped his victims multiple times during a single encounter.

According to the police, “His 10-year raping spree was brought to an abrupt end when police cornered and arrested him in April 2021. Nxumalo’s application for an appeal was refused, and he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.”

Exemplary Police Work

Credit for Nxumalo’s capture and conviction goes to the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit. Their meticulous investigative work ensured that Nxumalo was finally brought to justice, ending his decade-long spree.

Other Convictions in the Region

The Mtubatuba High Court’s verdict is part of a broader push to address sexual violence in the region. Other recent convictions include:

  • Empangeni FCS Unit’s Achievement: A 59-year-old man received a life sentence for repeatedly raping his eight-year-old stepdaughter. The court heard harrowing accounts of the abuse, which occurred while the child’s mother was away.
  • Esikhaleni Regional Court Sentencing: A 58-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of raping his 12-year-old granddaughter in Madlankala in February 2024.
  • Empangeni Regional Court’s Decision: A 25-year-old man received a 25-year prison sentence for assaulting and raping his 22-year-old girlfriend. The victim’s ordeal was so traumatic that she attempted suicide and had to be hospitalised.
