Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, affirmed his satisfaction with the current security measures deployed for the protection of former President Jacob Zuma. General Cele emphasized that the security arrangements for Zuma are comparable to those provided to other former Heads of States in South Africa. This statement came in response to allegations raised by the uMkhonto we Sizwe party (MK), which claimed that Zuma’s security was compromised and that he is still using outdated vehicles previously used by FW de Klerk.

The MK party raised concerns over the safety of former President Zuma, suggesting his life is under threat. They highlighted a recent incident involving Zuma and his bodyguards in a car crash while traveling from Nkandla to eShowe in KwaZulu-Natal to campaign for the party. “President Zuma’s life, yes, is under threat, it has always been under threat. Fact. But how can it not be under threat when… And then all of a sudden there’s an accident,” the MK party stated, suggesting a potential targeted attack on Zuma’s motorcade.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have taken swift action following the incident, arresting a 51-year-old man believed to be responsible for the collision with the state vehicle carrying former President Zuma and his bodyguards. The suspect is charged with drunken and reckless driving. National police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, provided details of the accident, noting that it occurred on the R66 on Thursday, 28 March 2024, around 18:40. “No one was injured, including members of the presidential protection services. The former President was evacuated from the scene and taken to his residence,” Mathe explained. The arrested man is currently detained and scheduled to appear before the eShowe Magistrate Court.

Amidst calls for oversight on Zuma’s security arrangements following the crash, Lirandzu Themba, Police Ministry Spokesperson, issued a statement defending the Ministry’s position. Themba criticized the demands for the Minister of Police to be questioned about Zuma’s security details as “reckless and out of order”. She affirmed that the Ministry and the South African Police Service (SAPS) have been thoroughly briefed on the matter and see no reason to publicise the security details of any current or former head of state.
