Bellville Traffic Officer Detained for Alleged R15,000 Bribe

Bellville-based Serious Corruption Investigation team of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, popularly known as The Hawks, have apprehended a traffic officer Renay Claudine Ruiters, 47, on corruption charges.

Ruiters is accused of soliciting a R15,000 bribe from an individual she detained on charges of driving under the influence in September 2023. The incident was reported to The Hawks, leading to her arrest on Wednesday.

After her initial appearance in Cape Town Magistrate’s Court, Ruiters was granted bail set at R1,000. A follow-up session has been postponed until April 5, 2024, pending further investigation.

Major General Mathipa Makgato, the head of The Hawks in the Western Cape, expressed satisfaction over the arrest, stating that all law enforcement officials are duty-bound to uphold and enforce the law. He hoped this arrest will serve as a powerful deterrent to potential law-breakers.
