Court Crime Arrest convicted bail

The Musina Regional Court convicted former Beitbridge Border Post official, Nthapeleng Munyai, and former Clearing Agent, Tsumbedzo Nemaangani, for fraud and corruption on June 30, 2023. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against criminal activities at the border.

The incident dates back to March 2016 when Munyai, a Clearing Agent, colluded with Nemaangani, a customs official, to facilitate the illegal entry of a truck carrying semi-manufactured tobacco products from Zimbabwe into South Africa. Their aim was to bypass clearance procedures and documentation required at the border.

However, their plan was foiled when the Cross Border Road Traffic Agency inspected the truck at the weigh bridge. The driver presented forged documents that didn’t match the truck’s details, leading to further suspicion. Consequently, the truck was redirected back to Beitbridge Border Post for a physical examination.

During the inspection, the truck’s driver fled the scene, and the Clearing Agent also disappeared. Authorities discovered over R6 million worth of undeclared semi-manufactured tobacco products concealed inside the truck, triggering a fraud investigation. The case was promptly handed over to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit for further action.

The Polokwane-based Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigators were responsible for apprehending both accused individuals. Following their arrest, Munyai and Nemaangani appeared in the Musina Magistrates’ Court and were subsequently released on bail.

After a meticulous investigation, the accused were finally convicted as follows:

– Nthapeleng Munyai (Accused No. 1): Fraud, Forgery, and three counts of Corruption.

– Tsumbedzo Nemaangani (Accused No. 2): Fraud.

The court remanded the case to September 13, 2023, for pre-sentence proceedings, during which the appropriate punishment for the convicted individuals will be determined.
