Be Vigilant: Snake Season Arrives in Ekurhuleni

Snakes

As the temperature rises and the season transitions from winter to spring, the City of Ekurhuleni is urging residents to stay alert for the presence of snakes. This time of year marks the beginning of snake season, when these creatures venture out in search of food.

Snake season in Ekurhuleni spans from the middle of August to late May, during which both harmless and dangerous snakes come out of hiding.

Among the dangerous species are the puff adder and rinkhals. The puff adder is known for its instinctive nature, slow-paced movement, and quick response to potential threats.

The rinkhals, or ring-necked cobra, is a fast-moving snake that is skilled in feigning death. It can be easily identified by the two white stripes visible across its neck when it spreads its hood.

With the increased activity of snakes, pet owners are advised to be cautious and keep a watchful eye on their beloved animals, as they may become prey to these reptiles.

While it is crucial to remain vigilant against harmful snakes, the City of Ekurhuleni underscores the importance of recognizing harmless snakes that pose no threat to humans. Species like the brown house snake, arora house snake, olive house snake, and red-lipped snake can often be found in backyard gardens in search of food, such as rodents. However, the city discourages the practice of capturing or killing these harmless snakes, as it is both illegal and punishable without a proper permit.

In case of snake encounters, residents can contact the city’s dedicated snake catchers for assistance. The following individuals can be reached at the provided phone numbers: Makhosonke Mabena (071 833 6549), Sonny Katisa (073 988 8131), Mapaseka Maleka (079 180 9231), Lucky Mahlangu (083 237 7137), and Mbali Masango (081 043 5354).
