Stellenbosch FC head coach, Steve Barker
By Mpho Moloi
Stellenbosch FC head coach, Steve Barker, has emphasised the need for his team to maintain their bravery and composure as they prepare for the crucial second leg of the MTN8 semi-final against Mamelodi Sundowns. This encounter, set to take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, has the Cape Winelands side holding a narrow 1-0 lead, courtesy of Fawaaz Basadien’s penalty in the first leg.
A Hard-Fought First Leg Victory
In the first leg, Stellenbosch FC executed a tactically disciplined performance that allowed them to secure a vital away goal. The match, held at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, was a tightly contested affair, with Sundowns dominating possession but failing to break through the resolute Stellenbosch defence. Basadien’s spot-kick came after a mistake from Sundowns during a set-piece, which proved costly for the Pretoria-based giants.
Reflecting on the first leg, Barker noted the importance of the away goal but was quick to acknowledge that the job is far from finished. “To go into the second leg with an advantage is a big plus for us, but we are mindful that it is only half-time and that we are up against a really good team,” Barker remarked. He also praised his players for their execution, particularly in the defensive phases, where they had to withstand significant pressure from a talented Sundowns attack.
The Challenge Ahead
As they prepare for the second leg, Barker has stressed the importance of bravery and taking chances when they arise. He understands that defending a slender lead for 90 minutes against a team of Sundowns’ calibre is a daunting task. “It’s going to be key for us to take the chances we create. If we don’t, it just won’t be possible to defend for 90 minutes. We’re going to have to be brave and continue playing and taking the game to them whenever it is possible,” Barker explained.
Sundowns, on the other hand, will be coming into the second leg determined to overturn the deficit. Their head coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, expressed disappointment in his team’s performance in the first leg, particularly in their inability to capitalise on their possession and create clear-cut chances. Mngqithi admitted that his side’s errors, particularly in their set-piece defense, were costly but remained optimistic about their chances in the return leg.
Players to Watch
For Stellenbosch, the midfield dynamo Sihle Nduli will be crucial in disrupting Sundowns’ rhythm and providing the link between defense and attack. His ability to break up play and initiate counter-attacks could be vital as Stellenbosch looks to exploit any spaces left by Sundowns as they push for goals.
Sundowns will likely rely on the experience and goal-scoring ability of Iqraam Rayners, who could be reintroduced into the lineup after missing the first leg. His movement and finishing ability will be a significant threat that Stellenbosch’s defense will need to contain.
A Pivotal Clash
The second leg of this MTN8 semi-final is set to be a high-stakes affair. Both teams have everything to play for, with Stellenbosch aiming to make history by reaching the final of this prestigious competition, while Sundowns will be desperate to avoid an early exit and add another trophy to their cabinet.
The match kicks off at 15:00 on Sunday, and it will be broadcast live on SuperSport PSL and SABC Sport channels. Tickets for the game are available through TicketPro, with a price of R80.00 per ticket.
This encounter is not just about the result on the day; it’s about the strategies employed, the execution of those strategies, and the mental toughness of both sides. As Barker rightly pointed out, “there is still a lot of work to be done,” and the team that handles the pressure better on the day will likely emerge victorious.
Stellenbosch FC has already shown that they can compete with the best in the league, but they will need to be at their very best to overcome Sundowns in this all-important clash. Fans can expect a thrilling encounter that will test the mettle of both sides as they vie for a spot in the MTN8 final.
