Banyana Banyana beat Tunisia 1-0 to reach the semifinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco on Thursday night.
The lone 14th minute strike from Jermaine Seoposenwe not only secured a place in the WAFCON semifinals, but it also guaranteed a ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. All four WAFCON semifinalists are guaranteed places in next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Such was their dominance that coach Desiree Ellis’ charges should have buried their North African rivals under an avalanche of goals long before the final whistle, but in the end this quarterfinal match was secured courtesy of Seoposenwe’s goal.
The lethal Seoposenwe showed her lethal skills in front of goal as she shrugged off the attentions of several Tunisians, following a delicious pass from Mapula Kgoale, to finally beat goalkeeper Nesrine Zizi with a low shot that sailed to the bottom corner of the net.
The South Africans created several gilt-edged opportunities and had enough chances to deliver the knockout blow that would have knocked the Tunisians out for the count. But in the end it was Seoposenwe’s lone first half strike that secured the win and the priceless ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
