Banyana Banyana Head Coach Desiree Ellis
Banyana Banyana’s head coach, Desiree Ellis, is set to be awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) on Thursday, 25 April 2024.
CPUT has orchestrated a grand commencement, celebrating the remarkable achievements of over 7,000 graduands, including 6,373 undergraduates and 735 postgraduates, across 14 ceremonies spanning from 22 April to 26 April 2024. Amid this academic festivity, Ellis’s contribution to football will shine brightly, marking a significant highlight of the university’s graduation season.
Ellis’s illustrious career, both as a formidable professional sportsperson and as the steely navigator behind Banyana Banyana’s rise to prominence, has not only captured hearts but has also rewritten history. Under her guidance, Banyana Banyana clinched the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022 by defeating Morocco 2-1 in a gripping final, securing their first-ever continental crown. This victory was soon followed by a historic performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where the team became the first South African senior national team—encompassing both genders—to advance beyond the group stages. Their electrifying 3-2 victory over Italy ensured their passage into the Round of 16, cementing their place in football lore.
Ellis, who is to be flanked by her family and close friends during the recognition, recently bagged the Best Coach award in the women’s category at a ceremony in Marrakech on 11 December 2023—her fourth CAF award and a record in its own right. Her storied career received another feather in its cap earlier in the year when President Cyril Ramaphosa bestowed upon her the Order of Ikhamanga in gold. This accolade, presented at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guest House in Bryntirion, Pretoria, on 28 April 2023, was in recognition of her invaluable contribution to sport, uplifting the communal spirit synonymous with South African achievements on the global stage.
