The SASOL-sponsored Banyana Banyana marched to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a game to spare as they comfortably beat Burundi in a Group C encounter at the Complexe Sportif Prince Heritier Moulay Al Hassan on Thursday night.
The South African senior women’s national team should have won this match by a higher margin, given the number of gilt-edged chances they created, but in the end emerged with a 3-1 win.
Thembi Kgatlana was the first to get the South Africans on the stadium scoreboard when she scored the opening goal of the match in the 20th minute. But Banyana Banyana took their foot off the pedal and Burundi clawed their way back with an equalizer courtesy of Aniella Awimana 10 minutes later.
Banyana Banyana restored normal service when Amogelang Motau put the South Africans in the lead two minutes later during a frenzied first half.
Coach Desiree Ellis’ charges finally got the goal they needed to make the game safe when Linda Motlhalo converted from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute after Thembi Kgatlana was brought down inside the area.
