Banyana Banyana
The South African women’s national soccer team, Banyana Banyana, has arrived in Côte d’Ivoire ahead of the away leg of the final round of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup Of Nations qualifier (WAFCON) against Burkina Faso. Coach Desiree Ellis’ charges are gearing up for a crucial match on 30 November 2023.
The team traveled with 20 players, with Ayesha Moose of the University of Johannesburg replacing Wendy Shongwe, who was unable to join the team due to a family illness. Additionally, forward Jermaine Seoposenwe will join the team for the second leg in South Africa.
After arriving in Abidjan, the team will have their first official training session on Tuesday afternoon before traveling to Yamoussoukro, where they will face-off against Burkina Faso at the Stade Charles Konan Banny on Thursday at 18:00pm CAT.
This will be the last fixture for Banyana Banyana in 2023, and the team will return to action in February 2024 to continue with their 2024 Olympic qualifiers. The team has had a successful year, making history at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup by becoming the first South African senior national team to make it to the knockout stages of a FIFA tournament.
In recognition of their achievements, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has shortlisted Banyana Banyana in the National Team of the Year (women) category for the upcoming continental awards to be hosted in Morocco. Additionally, several members of the team and the coaching staff have been shortlisted in individual categories, highlighting the team’s outstanding contributions to women’s soccer.
