Banyana Banyana
Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has named her final squad of 23 players for the upcoming Olympic Third Round qualifiers against Tanzania. The Sasol-sponsored national champions are set to confront their rivals in a two-legged series with the away match scheduled for February 23 and the return leg on February 27 at Mbombela Stadium.
A palpable sense of determination filled the air at the Johannesburg camp, where the squad has been preparing for the crucial fixtures. The announcement was made during a press conference graced by the presence of SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan, SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao, and Sasol Senior Manager: Group Brand and Sponsorship Nozipho Mbatha.
Ellis, assessing the challenge ahead, recognized Tanzania’s recent accomplishments and reinforced that the team is well-prepared, stating, “We know the opponents, we have footage and we’ve already analysed them, the same way I’m sure as they have analysed us. They beat Togo, who were at the last WAFCON, and that’s no mean feat. They also beat Botswana to qualify for this stage. We’re not taking anything for granted.” She further elaborated on the depth of preparation involved: “But the analysts have done really well in getting as much information as they can, setting up an analysis on the opponent and as a technical team we’ve all studied that and we know what to expect. We have to be at the absolute best, of course, because that’s the only way you can get the result.”
Offering his unwavering support, Dr Jordaan reflected on the team’s remarkable ability to rise to the occasion. “We wish Banyana Banyana all the best,” he said. “It’s going to be a difficult game, but we believe in this team. This team has shown over a period of time that they can produce when the pressure is on.”
Meanwhile, Mbatha expressed Sasol’s endorsement of the team: “I just want to extend a heartfelt congratulations for the members of the team who have been chosen to represent all of us, including your number one supporter and sponsor Sasol. We are 1000 percent behind you.”
Banyana Banyana, having departed for Tanzania on February 20, 2024, will aim to secure a strong advantage in the away fixture before they return to their home turf on February 24, gearing up for the critical showdown at Mbombela Stadium on February 27.
