Bail Hearing for Suspects in Putco Bus Arson Case Delayed

Putco Bus

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has announced a postponement in the bail hearing of Isaac Mabena (29) and Luthando Skhosana (37), the two men accused of torching 51 Putco buses in Mpumalanga. The delay is to allow the State additional time to verify the information provided by the accused in their bail applications.

Background of the Case

On the night of 27 January 2025, a coordinated attack led to the destruction of 51 Putco buses across four depots in Mpumalanga. The assailants, reportedly armed and wearing balaclavas, assaulted several Putco employees during the incident. One security guard sustained a gunshot wound, while others were physically assaulted.

Mabena and Skhosana were arrested shortly after the incident. During their arrest, authorities reportedly found a mobile phone belonging to one of the victims and a 9mm pistol magazine in their possession.

The accused face multiple charges, including:

• Aggravated robbery
• Malicious damage to property
• Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

In their recent court appearance, both Mabena and Skhosana expressed their desire to be released on bail. However, the State opposed this, citing concerns that the accused might flee and emphasizing the strength of the evidence against them.

Ongoing Investigations

The investigation is still active, with authorities pursuing additional leads. Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Donald Mdlhuli, emphasized that the probe extends beyond the Siyabuswa area, indicating a broader scope of inquiry.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the swift action taken by the police in apprehending the suspects and expressed confidence in the ongoing investigation.

Next Steps

The court has scheduled the next hearing for 13 February 2025, during which the formal bail application will be considered. Until then, Mabena and Skhosana will remain in custody.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the motive behind the arson attack. The incident has significantly disrupted public transportation in the region, affecting thousands of commuters who rely on Putco’s services.
