On this Human Rights Day, 21 March 2025, South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, is set to face Lesotho in a crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier at the newly renovated Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. This match not only signifies a pivotal moment in South Africa’s quest for World Cup qualification but also embodies the nation’s unity and resilience.
The Road to Qualification
Bafana Bafana currently stands second in Group C, level on seven points with leaders Rwanda, trailing only on goal difference. The group also includes formidable opponents such as Benin, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho. With only the group winner securing a spot in the World Cup, the stakes are undeniably high. Securing maximum points in the upcoming fixtures against Lesotho and Benin is imperative for South Africa’s aspirations.

However, the team faces challenges with injuries. Mamelodi Sundowns’ left-back, Aubrey Modiba, has been sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained during a recent match against Orlando Pirates. In response, Coach Broos has called up Sekhukhune United’s Vuyo Letlapa as a replacement, ensuring stability in the defensive lineup. 
Emerging Talent: Relebohile Mofokeng
A spotlight shines on 20-year-old Relebohile Mofokeng of Orlando Pirates. Mofokeng’s recent performances, including a remarkable brace against Mamelodi Sundowns, have earned him a place in the national squad. His inclusion reflects Coach Broos’ commitment to integrating young talent, aiming to inject creativity and dynamism into the team’s midfield. 
Match Preparations and Venue
The Peter Mokaba Stadium has undergone significant renovations to ensure optimal playing conditions. Concerns regarding the pitch’s readiness have been addressed, with Coach Broos expressing satisfaction with the improvements. The team’s training camp commenced in Johannesburg on 17 March 2025, followed by a relocation to Polokwane to acclimate to the venue ahead of the match. 
Ticketing and Fan Engagement
Tickets for the match are available through TicketPro, priced at R70 for adults and R40 for children under 12. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets early and attend in numbers to support the national team. For those unable to attend in person, the match will be broadcast live on SABC, ensuring nationwide access to the game.
Coach’s Perspective
Coach Broos acknowledges the significance of the upcoming fixtures, emphasizing the need for mental fortitude and collective effort. He cautions against underestimating Lesotho, highlighting their resilience and determination. Broos believes that securing six points from the two matches would be a substantial step toward World Cup qualification.
