Bafana Bafana vs Algeria

Bafana Bafana and their coach Hugo Broos were left with much to be proud of after securing a 3-3 draw against Algeria in a pulse-racing FIFA Series match on Tuesday evening at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers.

Despite conceding first to a goal from Yassine Benzia in the 22nd minute, South Africa showed resilience and tactical nous to balance the scoreline with Themba Zwane netting in the 34th minute off a well-executed cross from Mihlali Mayambela.

Bafana Bafana then surged ahead shortly after halftime, with Zwane once again showcasing his prowess by sending a sublime strike past Algerian keeper Moustafa Zeghba in the 47th minute. However, the lead was short-lived, as Algeria’s Brahimi restored parity by scoring five minutes later.

The South African contingent regained the advantage with Iqraam Rayners putting them in the lead at 3-2 in the 65th minute, but our celebration was tempered when Benzia claimed his brace to conclude the scoring at 3-3 in the 70th minute.

Speaking after the match, an elated Broos praised the quality and determination of his side: “What a game! It was a fantastic game from both teams, but the performance of South Africa was really, really good. We played against a very strong team, but I do not think there was much difference between the quality of our game and the quality of the game of Algeria. That means we have progressed in the last few months.”

The match served as an essential benchmark for South Africa’s senior men’s team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifications starting in June this year. Broos used this encounter as a strategic measure to expand his selection pool and was evidently pleased with the team’s progress and unity on the international stage.
