ALGIERS – South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, arrived in Algiers on Saturday, welcomed by South African embassy officials, ahead of their upcoming friendly against the Algerian national team this Tuesday.

The visit marks a crucial part of the ongoing FIFA Series, which aims to enhance international football relations and offer teams valuable competitive experience.

Led by SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan and Head of Delegation David Molwantwa, the squad including coach Hugo Broos, technical staff, and players were greeted by senior embassy figures such as Bernard Legodi, the chargé d’affaires at the South African Embassy in Algiers, as well as political councillor Louis Nteko, First Secretary Duminsani Molawo, and Third Secretary Puff Dinalo.

Upon touchdown, the team completed a brief one-hour journey from Annaba, where they had been stationed since departing Johannesburg earlier in the week.

While in the coastal city of Annaba, Bafana Bafana managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Andorra last Thursday, where they opened their international fixtures in the Mediterranean region.

Tuesday’s encounter with Algeria presents a valuable chance for the team to further hone their skills and cohesion against a formidable opponent, following their respectable finish as bronze medalists in the recent Africa Cup of Nations.

The FIFA Series is part of a broader initiative by FIFA, the world’s football governing body, to assist its member associations in organising a series of friendly matches.

Facilitating contests among four national teams from varied confederations, all within a host nation, this program aims to provide consistent opportunities for countries to engage with teams outside their usual competitive spheres, potentially unlocking new avenues for technical progression.

The Algerian stage of the Series includes a diverse lineup, featuring South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, Bolivia, Andorra, and the host nation Algeria, promising a thrilling set of matches for football enthusiasts and invaluable experience for the participating nations.
