Bafana Bafana
By Sello Masilo
As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers approach their climax, Bafana Bafana, South Africa’s senior men’s national football team, is set to face two pivotal matches that will determine their participation in next year’s tournament in Morocco. Under the guidance of coach Hugo Broos, the team will first confront Uganda in Kampala on Friday, 15 November 2024, followed by a home fixture against South Sudan at DHL Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday, 19 November 2024.
Coach Hugo Broos’ Confidence and Strategy
Despite acknowledging the challenges of securing a victory on Ugandan soil, Coach Broos remains optimistic about his squad’s capabilities. Reflecting on the team’s achievements earlier this year, he stated, “We can end 2024 on a fantastic note. We started the year very well with the bronze medal (at the AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire) and it would be nice to end it with qualification for AFCON again.” He emphasized the importance of the upcoming match against Uganda, noting their opponent’s confidence and strong performance in the qualifiers. However, Broos expressed faith in his team’s quality and their ability to triumph in challenging situations.
Squad Updates and Preparations
The training camp commenced in Johannesburg on Monday, with most players reporting for duty. Notably, Mihlali Mayambela has been withdrawn from the squad due to an injury sustained while playing for his Cypriot club, Aris Limassol. He has been replaced by Devin Titus, who has already joined the camp. Midfielder Luke Le Roux and defender Siyabonga Ngezana are expected to arrive on Tuesday to complete the squad.
Current Standings and Match Significance
Bafana Bafana currently occupies second place in Group K with eight points, trailing group leaders Uganda by two points. A victory in Kampala would not only secure qualification but also potentially position South Africa at the top of the group. The subsequent match against South Sudan in Cape Town offers an additional opportunity to solidify their standing and momentum heading into the AFCON tournament.
Ticketing Information for Cape Town Match
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has announced that tickets for the Cape Town fixture are now available at various outlets, including TicketPro, Spar, SuperSpar, Putco, Postnet, Jam Clothing, and select Shell, SASOL, and BP garages. Gates at the stadium will open at 15:00, with ticket prices set at R60.00 for adults. Children, scholars, and students can purchase tickets for R30.00, with school uniforms or student cards required for those over 12 years old.
