South Africa’s national soccer team, Bafana Bafana, is gearing up to take on Mali in the opening Group E match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The highly anticipated match will take place at the Stade Amadou Gon Coulibaly in Khorogo tonight (Tuesday 16 January 2024).
Fans both in South Africa and around the world are eagerly awaiting to see how coach Hugo Broos’ team will perform in the continental tournament in Cote d’Ivoire. Striker Percy Tau, who brings vast experience in continental competitions for both club and country, expressed the team’s hunger for success as they look to make their mark on the continental stage.
“We are a good team. We have come a long way in the past two years, building towards this moment,” said Tau, who currently plays for Al Ahly. “We want to win, we have the hunger and the drive to succeed. We only want what is best for us and our country. We need support to do that as well and it does not just happen. We are here and ready to put up a fight.”
Coach Broos, who led Cameroon to a surprise Africa Cup of Nations victory in 2017, expressed his desire to see Bafana Bafana achieve the same success. While he has been reluctant to draw parallels between the Cameroon team and his current squad, he emphasized his personal goal of securing another AFCON title.
Bafana Bafana’s opening match against Mali is set for 10pm local time.
