Bafana Bafana
The stage is set for Bafana Bafana’s upcoming back-to-back 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda. Despite facing some injury setbacks, the team is determined to achieve success and make their mark on the international stage.
The team entered their training camp at the University of Pretoria on Monday, November 13th, 2023. However, the injury woes have impacted the team’s composition and left coach Hugo Broos frustrated. Broos emphasized the importance of winning against tough opponents in the World Cup qualifiers and expressed the team’s desire to perform well and emerge victorious.
In the midst of the challenges, the players have made an appeal to South Africans and the media to support their teammate, Lyle Foster, who is taking a break to prioritize his mental health. Foster is currently not part of the team in camp, and Broos clarified that his absence is due to a medical problem. Captain Ronwen Williams assured Foster that the team stands behind him and sends their thoughts and prayers.
Vice-Captain Percy Tau expressed his disappointment over the negativity surrounding Foster’s decision to take a break. He acknowledged that being on the receiving end of such criticism can be hurtful, but the players understand that it is part of their job and they remain committed to the sport they love.
In terms of the team’s composition, Sphephelo Sithole and Mihlali Mayambela joined the camp on Tuesday morning, replacing Grant Kekana and Thapelo Maseko, who are currently out due to injury. Additionally, Lebo Mothiba’s injury led to his replacement by Evidence Makgopa on Monday.
The upcoming match against Benin will take place at the Durban venue on Saturday, November 18th, 2023. Tickets for the match are already available for purchase at Ticketpro. General admission tickets are priced at R50 for adults and R20 for children under 13 years old.
