In a high-stakes encounter that will determine their fate, Bafana Bafana face off against Eswatini in their final Group A match in the COSAFA Cup. The match, scheduled for Tuesday, 2 July 2024, will take place at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in Gqeberha, with kick-off set for 3pm.

The South African national team finds itself in a must-win situation to secure a semifinal spot, following consecutive draws against Mozambique (1-1) and Botswana (0-0). Coach Helman Mkhalele acknowledged the enormity of the challenge ahead and emphasized the necessity for his team to rebound strongly.

“We have to make sure we bounce back tomorrow and win our game because if we don’t get a win, any results other than a win could send us home. We might not know what will be happening in the other group game between Mozambique and Botswana,” stated Mkhalele.

Tactical Adjustments on the Horizon

Mkhalele hinted at making several changes to the starting line-up that drew against Botswana last Saturday. He emphasized the significance of not just winning but also doing so convincingly, as goal difference might prove to be the tiebreaker.

“It is still in our hands, and it is crucial that we do the business against Eswatini by making sure that we score more goals, and we don’t concede, because the goal difference could become a factor. It is important that we keep a clean sheet, and we score as many goals as possible,” Mkhalele remarked.

Bolstering the Attack

One of the key areas Mkhalele aims to improve is the support upfront for striker Thabang Sibanyoni. In the previous match, Sibanyoni was often isolated and without sufficient backup, a scenario Mkhalele is keen to rectify.

“And for us to be able to score those many goals, I believe that we will need to make sure that we beef up our striking force and more especially give Sibanyoni the support that he needs upfront as he has won almost each and every high ball played to him. Now we need someone who will anticipate those high balls and use them effectively,” Mkhalele explained.
