Bafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos
By Mpho Moloi
Johannesburg- In the wake of the eagerly anticipated draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Bafana Bafana head coach, Hugo Broos, has expressed a measured sense of optimism. While satisfied with the draw, Broos has cautioned that the journey to qualify for the tournament, scheduled to be held in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026, will demand vigilance and dedicated preparation.

Favourable Draw Raises Hopes
The draw, conducted on Thursday, 4 July 2024, in Johannesburg, placed South Africa in Group K alongside Uganda, Congo, and South Sudan. Broos, speaking from Belgium, reflected on the recent achievements of the team, noting, “When we look at our performances in the AFCON in the beginning of the year in Côte d’Ivoire where we achieved the bronze medal, and also in the following games (in the FIFA Series in Algeria), I think we can be very confident.”
However, the seasoned coach emphasised the necessity for maintaining the high standards set in recent months. “It will be important to achieve our level, our good level of the last few months. We have to say that from this group, we have to qualify for AFCON 25 in Morocco,” Broos remarked.
A Momentous Event in Johannesburg
The draw, a significant event in the African football calendar, was attended by notable figures from the South African Football Association (SAFA). Among those present were SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan, Vice Presidents Natasha Tsichlas and Linda Zwane, and CEO Lydia Monyepao. The ceremony saw CAF assign the 48 participating nations into 12 groups of four, setting the stage for a competitive and thrilling qualification phase.
Focused on Qualification
While South Africa’s recent form in AFCON and their resilience during the FIFA Series in Algeria have instilled confidence, Broos insists that there is no room for complacency. The task ahead, he believes, demands unwavering focus and tactical astuteness.
The Bafana Bafana coach is particularly aware of the challenge posed by their Group K opponents. Uganda, Congo, and South Sudan all present unique obstacles that the South African team must navigate carefully. As Broos underscores, the objective is clear: to secure qualification for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
Support from SAFA
SAFA’s leadership has also echoed Broos’ sentiments, underscoring their commitment to ensuring that the team is well-prepared for the qualification journey. Dr Danny Jordaan expressed optimism, stating, “We have a solid team, and the draw is favourable. However, we must approach each match with the seriousness it deserves. Our aim is to not only qualify but to contend strongly in Morocco.”
