Bafana Bafana and SAFA
The Bafana Bafana players and the South African Football Association (SAFA) management came to an agreement on the payment structures for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Côte d’Ivoire. The meeting, which took place on Sunday, January 7, 2024, saw key players represented by captain Ronwen Williams, Percy Tau, Siyanda Xulu, Veli Mothwa, and Themba Zwane signing the memorandum on behalf of the team.
The SAFA management, which included President Dr. Danny Jordaan, Vice President Bennett Bailey, CEO Lydia Monyepao, and HOD David Molwantwa, expressed satisfaction at the resolution. “We are happy that we could meet with the players, hear them out and come to an agreement on the financial side,” said the SAFA CEO.
Dr. Jordaan also commented on the agreement, stating, “Bafana Bafana will fare well in this edition of the AFCON and we are happy that this side of the game is now laid to rest. We have discussed and signed an agreement, which remains confidential between management and players. We are now fully focused on the tournament, on doing well at the AFCON.”
Dr. Jordaan also revealed that the team’s payment structure would offer a substantial bonus of R7 million for a win, while they would receive no payment for a loss. “If they win, they get R7 million, if they lose they get nothing. We want the team to focus and to perform. We don’t want to waste time on discussing unnecessary stuff,” Dr. Jordaan asserted.
Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos and his team are currently in camp in Stellenbosch preparing for the continental tournament. The team is set to play an international friendly against Lesotho behind closed doors in Johannesburg on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, before departing for Côte d’Ivoire on Thursday morning.
