By Thys Khiba – The former South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC)head of News Phathiswa Magopeni has made it to the recommended list of the SABC board candidates after Parliament’s subcommittee forwarded her name.
The SABC axed Magopeni earlier this year over allegations of negligence following the airing of an interdicted episode of the investigative journalism show, Special Assignment.

According to Magopeni her dismissal from the broadcaster exposed a culture of flouting due process at the SABC.
The recommended list includes veteran journalists Renee Horn, Professor Frantz Kruger and Mpho Tsedu.
At least 34 candidates were interviewed to fill vacancies on the public service broadcaster’s board in September.
With the completed interviews by subcommittee, the Portfolio Committee on Communications will have a chance to consider and adopt, and refer the list to the president of South Africa.
Constitutional and corporate governance lawyer, Advocate Tseliso Thipanyane, former Icasa councillor, Nomvuyiso Batyi, SABC board member, David Maimela and Former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP, Magdalene Moonsamy forms part of the other candidates who cracked the list.
In the interest of gender equality and diversity, seven females out of 12 candidates made it to the list.
