Avian Influenza Outbreak

In a recent statement, Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Minister, Thoko Didiza, has reassured the public that the avian influenza outbreak is under control in South Africa. She stated that 70% of farms are not infected by the disease and are continuing to produce eggs and chickens.

Didiza also mentioned that egg stock levels are steadily replenishing, so there’s no need for panic buying at this stage. She shared some impressive numbers, saying, “We have increased fertilised eggs from 1.9 million to 9 million in less than one month. These eggs will be chickens in less than four months.”

The Minister explained that the department has a few open import permits for eggs and poultry products from a few countries. She emphasized that importing such products is not a new practice in South Africa, as it has been ongoing for many years, even before the avian influenza outbreak occurred. Countries like Brazil, USA, and Argentina have been exporting eggs to South Africa for quite some time, and there are currently more import permit applications from other countries being processed.

Didiza clarified that the department does not dictate from which countries South African retailers should import eggs. They only ensure that biosecurity risk assessments are conducted when importers apply for import permits.

With regards to the timeline, Didiza expects the situation to normalize early next year, as the egg production cycle is relatively short. However, she reassured the public that more eggs will continue to be imported if the situation does not improve.

To prepare for the upcoming festive season, the Minister shared that a significant number of fertilized eggs and poultry products have already been imported, including 37,802 tons of day-old chicks, 62 metric tons of egg products, and 30,986 metric tons of poultry meat.
