South African Customs Seize 23kg of Narcotics Disguised as Artwork at OR Tambo International Airport
Customs officers from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) made a significant drug bust at the OR Tambo International Airport, seizing 23kg of narcotics with an estimated street value of R37 million. The drugs were cleverly disguised as moulded artwork and were set to be shipped to New Zealand.
During routine inspection rounds last week, customs officers discovered a box containing suspicious-looking moulded artwork. Upon testing the items, they found 10kg of crystal meth and 13kg of fentanyl concealed within the artwork.
The narcotics were promptly handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.
SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter commended the vigilance of the customs officers, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to preventing the illegal import and export of narcotics.
Kieswetter stated, “SARS Customs will spare no effort in stopping the export or import of narcotics and any illegal substance which cause so much pain and hardship for families, particularly their youth. Drug smugglers must know that our Customs Division is fully committed to this objective, and will act without fear or favour against those criminals involved in the drugs trade. They must know that they will face the full might of the law.”
