Tsakani Maluleke, the Auditor-General of South Africa, has been appointed as the External Auditor of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for a six-year term starting from 2024 to 2029.

President Cyril Ramaphosa praised the appointment, stating that it is a recognition of Maluleke’s personal capabilities and South Africa’s governance institutions’ leadership capacity and integrity. The President appointed Maluleke as Auditor-General in December 2020 on the National Assembly’s recommendation. She had previously served as the Deputy Auditor-General, making her the first woman to hold this position.

With a background as a Chartered Accountant and registered auditor, Maluleke brings a wealth of expertise to her new role. She holds a B Comm (Accounting) and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Accountancy from the University of Cape Town. Additionally, she obtained a Post-graduate Diploma in Development and Public Management from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2016.

Maluleke’s election to the UNESCO position occurred on 16 November 2023, following a vote by members of various committees and subsidiary organs of the United Nations agency. UNESCO plays a vital role in promoting international cooperation in education, sciences, culture, communication, and information, contributing to global peace and security.

President Ramaphosa wished Maluleke well as she embarks on her new oversight position. Her appointment not only enhances South Africa’s reputation but also emphasizes the importance of capable and competent leadership in governance institutions.
