As we approach the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, voter registrations are now underway in earnest. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has recently launched a user-friendly website that allows South African citizens to easily register to vote and access important voter information.

The IEC’s website serves as a one-stop portal for all voter-related activities. From registering to vote, updating personal information, finding voting stations, requesting special votes, to browsing important election dates in your ward, the website has it all.

To register to vote, simply follow these easy steps:

1. Prepare your South African ID card or book, and visit the link registertovote.elections.org.za.
2. Enter your personal information, including your ID number, name, surname, and mobile number. Rest assured that this information is collected solely for the purpose of compiling and maintaining a national common voters’ roll, as mandated by the Protection of Personal Information Act, No. 4 of 2013.
3. A one-time pin (OTP) will be sent to your cellphone number. Enter the pin and click on “confirm pin”.
4. Provide your home address by typing it in and selecting from the list, or simply enter your address and click the search button.
5. Review and acknowledge your information in the voter registration summary. This page will also provide you with details about your ward and voting district.
6. Tick the declaration box and click on ID verification.
7. Take a photo or upload a scan of your SA ID, and click on continue.
8. Congratulations! Your voter registration application has been successfully submitted. The IEC will verify your application and notify you once it has been processed. You will receive an SMS notification.

In order to submit an application for voter registration, you must meet the following requirements:

– Be a South Africa citizen
– Be at least 16 years old (note that you can only vote from the age of 18)

When using the online voter registration system, you need to upload one of the following identification documents:

– Green barcoded ID book
– Smart ID card
– Temporary ID certificate (TIC)

It’s important to note that you will only be officially registered to vote once you receive a receipt via SMS or email, or confirm your registration status.

Since the launch of the online registration portal in July 2021, there have been a total of 1.1 million registration transactions recorded. The portal has seen significant activity this year, with 52% of transactions occurring in the past eleven months. New registrations account for 40.6% of the total online registration activity. Women make up the majority of users on the online portal, at 56%, while young individuals under the age of 29 make up 49.6% of users.

In addition to the online registration system, the Department of Home Affairs will be extending its operating hours for the voter registration weekend on November 18 and 19, 2023. This will allow eligible voters to access ID services and receive related support. The operating hours will align with those of the IEC, from 08:00 to 17:00, with the main service being offered as ID collection and application. Temporary Identification Certificates will also be issued on the spot for those who have lost or misplaced their IDs.

Electoral Commission Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo has urged all adult South Africans to take advantage of this opportunity to register as voters during the upcoming weekend. He emphasized that only those on the voters’ roll will have a say in the electoral outcomes next year.

With the availability of the IEC’s user-friendly website and the extended support from the Department of Home Affairs, the process of voter registration has never been easier. Make sure to register now and exercise your right to vote in the upcoming elections!
