The uMkhonto weSizwe party ( MK Party ) has been hit by another major leadership change, as Arthur Zwane formally resigned from his position as Secretary-General on 1 July 2024. Zwane cited the overwhelming volume of work and his commitments to other business interests as reasons for his abrupt departure.
In a letter sent on Monday to party leader Jacob Zuma, Zwane detailed his reasons for stepping down:
“I hereby wish to tender my resignation as Secretary General of uMkhonto weSizwe Party with immediate effect.
In the last two weeks, I have realised that the volume of work in my office is huge and beyond my limits, especially because I have other competing business interests that I’m pursuing.
I’m humbled by the confidence you had in me, starting from being DSG and later SG. I’ll be available to hand over to the new appointed SG at any determined time.
I will also be available to help with other organizational matters you want me to help with, however not on a full-time basis.”
Recent Leadership Changes
This development follows closely on the heels of another significant shift within the MK Party. On 12 June 2024, the party announced that Sihle Ngubane, the former Secretary-General, expressed his intention to transition to a parliamentary role. Ngubane has been appointed as Party Chief Whip in Parliament, a position that necessitated his departure from the secretary-general role.
The party had then issued a statement highlighting the reorganisation of its top leadership:
“Accordingly, MK Party confirms that Arthur Zwane will succeed him as the Secretary General. Additionally, Comrade Thulani CV Shongwe, who will maintain his position as Chief of Staff in the Presidency, has been appointed to serve as the Deputy Secretary General. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Comrade Sihle Ngubane for his distinguished leadership during a critical time for both our party and the nation. We have full confidence that Comrade Arthur Zwane and Comrade Thulani CV Shongwe will lead with exceptional dedication and continue to propel our mission forward.”
Uncertainties and Future Outlook
Zwane’s sudden resignation has thrown the party into a period of introspection and uncertainty. In less than a month, the MK Party has undergone two significant leadership changes, posing challenges for its internal stability.
Zwane’s departure, however, does not signify complete disengagement from the party. He has assured his availability for a smooth handover and for helping with other organisational matters, although not on a full-time basis.
