Demalani Secondary School
By Nkosana Khumalo
In the early hours of Saturday, 1 March 2025, a fire broke out at Demalani Secondary School in Kwaggafontein, Mpumalanga, completely destroying the administration block. Provincial Education spokesperson Gerald Sambo confirmed that officials have been dispatched to assess the damage and that a case of arson has been opened at the Kwaggafontein police station.
Details of the Incident
The fire, which occurred in the Thembisile Hani West Circuit, resulted in the total loss of the school’s administration facilities, including essential records and equipment. Sambo stated, “A case of arson has been opened with the Kwaggafontein police station, who would investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Impact on School Operations
Despite the extensive damage, the Department of Education is collaborating with the school’s management team and the School Governing Body to ensure that teaching and learning are not disrupted. Sambo emphasized the department’s commitment to maintaining educational continuity in the wake of the incident.
Recent Similar Incidents
This incident follows a similar case earlier in February 2025, when Peter Mokaba Primary School in KwaMhlanga, also within the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality, experienced a fire that gutted its administration block. A case of arson was opened, and investigations are ongoing.
Community Response
The community has expressed concern over these incidents, urging authorities to expedite investigations and implement measures to safeguard educational institutions. The recurrence of such events has raised alarms about the safety and security of schools in the region.
Ongoing Investigations
Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating both incidents to determine the causes and identify those responsible. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigations.
The Department of Education has reiterated its commitment to supporting affected schools and ensuring that educational activities continue with minimal disruption. Plans are underway to provide temporary facilities and resources to replace those lost in the fires.
