On Friday, The Hawks, in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, made a significant breakthrough in tackling truck hijackings in Gauteng.
Two men posing as Gauteng Traffic Officers were arrested following a series of reports regarding the incidents.
According to the Police Spokesperson Colonel Philani Nkwalase, the operation was executed by The Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section, Falcon Risk Solutions, Tracker Connect, Gauteng Traffic Police Saturation Unit, Gauteng Traffic Police Chopper, and Insurance Crime Bureau. Their meticulous investigation led them to the whereabouts of the bogus officers.
The suspects were caught driving towards Atteridgeville in Pretoria West, dressed in full Gauteng Traffic uniform, in an attempt to evade arrest. The joint police team successfully stopped and apprehended them.
Arrest of Bogus Gauteng Traffic Officers
Upon searching their vehicle, authorities discovered an unlicensed firearm with ammunition, a signal jammer, blue lights, SAPS issue firearms holsters, false government number plates, and additional traffic uniforms. These findings further corroborated their involvement in a spree of truck hijackings in Gauteng.
The two suspects are scheduled to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ court on Monday, July 31, 2023.
The collaborative efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved in this operation have once again demonstrated their commitment to maintaining public safety and bringing criminals to justice.
